IPL 2021 Match 27: CSK v/s MI. Mumbai win a thriller to maintain their dominance over Chennai.

Hello everyone and thank you for coming to read the summary of the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was played at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium and it was the best game of this season so far with Mumbai winning the match on the last ball of the final over. The two sides displayed a brilliant game of cricket and it went down to the wire in a high scoring game which Mumbai won to maintain their dominance over Chennai.

The toss was won by Mumbai and Rohit Sharma asked Chennai to bat first. Both the teams have a very strong batting line-up this season and the captain winning the toss was always going to bowl first at the good batting wicket of Delhi. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis opened the batting for Chennai but Ruturaj got out in the first over only. He was dismissed by Trent Boult for 4 runs. Moeen Ali came in next and started playing his shots. Faf complimented him very well from the other end and Chennai got a very good start in their first 10 overs. Moeen scored his first half-century this season as the duo put up 108 runs partnership for the second wicket. The partnership was eventually broken by Jasprit Bumrah who dismissed Moeen for 58 runs but Faf reached his 50 soon after that. He was dismissed by Kieron Pollard a couple of overs later and Suresh Raina too got out on the very next ball in the same over. Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja came in next. The two took some time initially for 1-2 overs but Rayudu started playing his shots after that. He timed the ball to perfection in this inning and he ended up scoring 72 runs in 27 balls as Chennai finished on 218 runs in their 20 overs. Jadeja on the other hand kept giving Rayudu the strike and Rayudu kept hitting those boundaries at ease. 218 was a very good score and this was going to be the biggest chase for Mumbai. Except for Pollard and Rahul Chahar, all the other bowlers conceded runs at an economy rate of more than 10 and Bumrah gave away 56 runs in his 4 overs.

Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma opened the inning for Mumbai in this run chase and the two got their team to a very good start. Both started playing their shots from the first ball and they looked to be in very good form. But Rohit was dismissed by Shardul Thakur for 35 runs and the opening partnership was broken. Jadeja dismissed Suryakumar Yadav for 2 runs and Mumbai lost 2 quick wickets. Moeen Ali got the wicket of Quinton in his first over and Mumbai suddenly looked to be losing control in the chase. But Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard batted sensibly from there and the duo brought their team back in the game. Pollard played his shots from the beginning and he even hit Jadeja for 3 sixes in an over. He targetted every bowler that came his way and he was hitting them all clean and far. Krunal was looking to support Pollard on the other end but he was dismissed by Sam Curran for 32 runs and the game got interesting at that stage. Curran gave away just 2 runs in the 17th over and Mumbai needed 48 runs to win in the final 3 overs. Pollard hit Shardul for 17 runs in the 18th over and Mumbai needed 31 runs in the final 2 overs. Hardik Pandya hit Curran for 2 sixes in the 19th over before getting dismissed on the fourth ball of the over. James Neesham too got out on the final ball of that over and Mumbai needed 16 runs in the final over. The final over was bowled by Lungi Ngidi and Pollard faced all the six balls of the over. He didn't rotate strike on the first and fourth balls but hit fours on the second and third and a six on the fifth ball of the over. With 2 runs needed to win on the final ball, Pollard ran two and won his side the match. He remained unbeaten at the end on 87 runs which he scored in just 34 balls. He spoiled the bowling figures of all the Chennai bowlers and Ngidi and Shardul gave away 62 and 56 runs respectively in their 4 overs. He also won the Man of the Match award for his overall performance and got his team their fourth win in seven matches.

Mumbai would be happy to see Pollard back in form and Krunal contributing well with the bat once again. They shouldn't complain much about their bowlers as it was that kind of day for the bowlers in both teams. Chennai too would be happy with their batting and they would be thinking that they could have won the match if Faf hadn't dropped the catch of Pollard in the 19th over. But both the teams are comfortable in the top 4 in the points table and they would look to stay in there in the remaining of their matches as well.

Moving on to the upcoming matches now, there are two matches on 2nd May. Rajasthan Royals would be playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the afternoon match. Both the teams have struggled this season and Hyderabad would be playing this match with their new captain, Kane Williamson. The team would be hoping for a change of fortunes with the change of captain. Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals would be up against each other in the evening match and both the teams are coming to this match after a comfortable win in their last matches. Both teams would be very confident at the moment and it would surely be an exciting game. We'll have to wait to find out which teams win these two matches. Please read the summary of those two matches here on Monday morning. Until then, stay home and stay safe!
