Hello everyone and thank you for turning up to read the summary of the 9th match of IPL 2021. The match was played between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad and it was the first time on MA Chidambaram stadium this season that any captain chose to bat first after winning the toss. The result of the last two matches on this ground was a factor for Mumbai Indians to choose to bat.
Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock opened the batting. Rohit started playing his shots from the first over whereas Quinton looked to be in the anchor role. Rohit hit 2 sixes and 2 fours in his 25 balls - 32 runs before being dismissed by Vijay Shankar. The next batsman was Suryakumar Yadav. He too hit a couple of boundaries but was dismissed soon after. The half-centurion of the last 2 innings was dismissed on 10 runs this time. Shankar got his 2nd wicket of the match. Ishan Kishan came to bat next but he struggled throughout the time he stayed in the middle. Hyderabad bowlers bowled well to build pressure on the two batsmen by not allowing easy runs and Quinton threw his wicket trying to play a big shot. He scored 40 but took 39 balls for that. And Ishan could score only 12 in 21 balls that he faced. Both these batsmen were dismissed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. But Kieron Pollard played big shots in the last 4 overs and hit 3 gigantic sixes. He remained not out on 35 which he scored in 22 balls. It wasn't easy to play big shots on every ball and Pollard paced his inning accordingly and scored those runs without taking much risk. Mumbai's inning ended on 150 and Hyderabad got the target of 151 to win their first match.
Hyderabad had a very good start as Jonny Bairstow played a lot of big shots and the team scored 57 in the power play overs. David Warner too looked in good form and the openers needed to continue for as long as they could as their middle over lacked experience and had no foreign batsmen either. But both Bairstow and Warner got out in the worst ways. Bairstow was dismissed hit wicket as he tried to get four runs off Krunal Pandya behind the wicket and Warner was run-out by Hardik Pandya because of a brilliant pick-up and throw. Bairstow scored 43 in 22 balls and Warner got 36 in 34 balls. And Mumbai could see their chances in the game from there. Nobody else looked comfortable in the middle. Even though Vijay Shankar started hitting some shots at the very end but he couldn't finish the game. Hyderabad kept losing wickets and regular intervals and the whole team was bowled out in the final over. Trent Boult and Rahul Chahar got 3 wickets each. Also, Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard were very economical in their spells and Mumbai won the match quite comfortably by 13 runs. This win takes them at the top of the points table with 2 wins in 3 matches but Hyderabad is still looking to get their first points as they fall to the bottom of the table with 3 losses in 3 matches.
Mumbai would want Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya to score some more runs in the middle as their middle-order hasn't been able to click together yet. But they would be pleased with the performance of their bowlers as they managed to be economical and pick up wickets as well.
Hyderabad would be expecting their main bowler, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar to be back in the grove in the next matches as he hasn't been at his best yet. And their middle-order is still a cause of concern for them. They lack somebody with experience in those middle overs and their batsmen aren't able to rotate the strike consistently. In today's game too, Hyderabad had played 7 overs of dot balls in the first 15 overs of the second inning. This isn't a stat to be proud of.
Tomorrow we have two matches in the tournament, hence double the fun. Royal Challengers Bangalore would be up against Kolkata Knight Riders in the afternoon game and Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings would be against each other in the evening game. We can once again expect close finishes in both the matches tomorrow. Let's see which teams manage to win.
